African Future Development (AFD) was established as a self-help group by and for unemployed graduates from Central African origin. Its purpose was to assist members of the group in their job seeking endeavours through a combination of moral and practical support in job hunting, CV preparation, interview skills and networking. As the group became more established it identified needs at all levels of education, training and employment amongst the African communities. In response, the group started to develop projects to meet these needs and develop the capacity and skills of the socially and economically disadvantaged members of the African community.

It became a company limited by guarantee in 2005 (No. 5453274) and a registered charity in 2006 (No. 1115026).
